People read this verse and then want to get into a word study on the meaning of the words Letteth and Let. Interestingly, those two words are not as important as the two pronouns used here, 'he' and 'he'.
2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only 'he' who now letteth will let, until 'he' be taken out of the way.
Who are the two pronouns 'he' and 'he' referring to? Let's start at the beginning.
2 Thessalonians 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2 that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
The first "he" refers to the noun in Verse 1: our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that MAN of sin be revealed, the SON of perdition; 4 who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
The second "he" refers to the noun in Verse 3: that MAN (of sin)... the SON (of perdition).
Therefore, Verse 7 could read as: For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only our Lord Jesus Christ who now letteth will let, until the man of sin, the son of perdition, be taken out of the way.
It is the Lord Jesus Christ who is keeping everything at bay. Once Satan is kicked out of heaven Jesus will not hold him back and all hell will break loose on earth.
2 Thessalonians 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9 even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
What event initiates all of this? The war in heaven where the devil is cast out of heaven. Once the devil is cast out of heaven Jesus will step aside and let the devil do his thing on earth. The antichrist will come on the scene. He will be killed by a deadly wound to the head. Satan will raise him from the dead. People will see this miracle and believe the antichrist is the Messiah. The dragon will cause men to create an image to the beast. The dragon will give life to the image. People will be made to worship the image of the beast and take the mark of the beast. Then, there will be 75 days of Great Tribulation culminating in the gathering, ie the Rapture.
